CranioSacral Therapy
“The body is a symphony of motion. On every level, our greatest promise for health is achieved when our body parts, from cellular to gross, are free to move in harmony with one another.”
The Body Is Self-Correcting
The human body has an innate ability to heal itself. This innate ability is sometimes referred to as the inner physician. CranioSacral Therapy enhances the body’s natural capacity for healing when disease or trauma becomes too overwhelming for the system.
What Is CranioSacral Therapy?
CranioSacral Therapy was developed by John E. Upledger, an osteopathic physician who was a Professor of Biomechanics at the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University. Dr. Upledger was the founder of The Upledger Institute, which teaches CranioSacral Therapy and other complementary modalities.
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a subtle approach that uses light touch, which has the ability to facilitate dramatic improvements in the life of the client. CST releases tension that is stored deep within the body, relieving dysfunction and pain, and improving health, vitality, and performance.
CranioSacral Therapy works with the central nervous system and the craniosacral system to help your body relax and self-correct imbalances. The central nervous system has a tremendous influence on health and well-being, and the craniosacral system has a big effect on the central nervous system, resulting in deep changes and healing potential.
The craniosacral system includes the soft tissues and fluid (cerebrospinal fluid) that protect the brain and spinal cord. As we work with these subtle systems through CranioSacral Therapy, we can release the stress, strain, and tension that build up in the body over time. CST allows the body to relax and self-correct, encouraging homeostasis.
Through freeing the stress and tension in the central nervous system, CranioSacral Therapy can naturally reduce stress and pain, help strengthen the body’s resistance to disease, and enhance the state of health and well-being of the client.
What To Expect In A Session
CranioSacral Therapy sessions are performed with the client fully clothed on a massage table. Sessions typically last one hour and can be as long as ninety minutes.
Sessions begin with the therapist applying gentle touch to various parts of the head and body to monitor the flow and rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid. Through this gentle palpation, the therapist can trace areas of slow fluid flow to their source.
Delicate (the weight of a nickel) manual techniques are incorporated to release blockages in the areas with less than optimal flow, thereby improving the function of the central nervous system.
What Might Be Experienced During A Session
Sessions are tailored to the unique needs of the individual’s system, and the experience one might have during the session is also very individual, and there is no certain way one should expect to feel. Sessions are generally very relaxing and create sensations of warmth or gentle flow, or light pulsing in the area in which the therapist is working. The result at the end of a session is typically an experience of deep calm, relaxation, and inner stillness.
